Checking for pipes in the walls

OK, so you are about to start that D.I.Y project you’ve been avoiding for weeks?
You think there may be a pipe in the wall but you’re not sure where exactly it runs, how can you avoid the risk of drilling through it?

In older properties most likely the pipe is going to be copper, and one method it to use a Pipe tracer to locate it, but these can be expensive, so another method would be to check in the roof-space to see if the pipes drop from the ceiling into the area you want to drill, or look outside to see if any pipes rise from the ground and enter the wall above ground level.

In newer properties most internal hot and cold pipes and gas pipes may well be Poly-Butylene, or flexible semi-metallic construction gas pipes, generally these will run through the roof-space and drop down to fixtures so are relatively easy to estimate their location.
